The 10 best Los Angeles Lakers big men of all time
Best Los Angeles Lakers big men of all time: 10. Mychal Thompson
It was tough choosing between the two Showtime era big men that were key role players on the way to win championships in the 1980s pictured above. But Mychal Thompson the former number one overall pick and two-time champion gets the nod over Kurt Rambis, who gets an honorable mention.
The Bohemian legend, Thompson was a star player for the Portland Trailblazers for a few seasons after they made him the number pick in 1978, but he was not a champion until he came to the Lakers. He was one of the best role players during the 1980s with the Lakers because he had that top-tier talent and was a terrific defender and rebounder in the paint.
He once averaged 20 points per game for the Blazers, and with the Lakers, he could still put the ball in the basket when needed, but his role was transformed more into doing the dirty work for the most glamorous team in the league at the time.
Mychal may not have had the jump shot that his son Klay Thompson possesses, however, he does have more size than Klay and that big frame allowed him to be a top 10 Lakers big man of all time, which is an elite group to be a part of.
Thompson has also stayed a part of the Lakers family post-playing career by being a great voice for the Lakers in the booth announcing Lakers games on the radio since 2003. That coupled with his regular appearances on sports radio in Los Angeles has allowed him to reach a younger Lakers fan base that did not get a chance to see him play.
Mychal even recently had the audacity to says on air that he could score 15 points for the Lakers right now if he wanted.
This is definitely wishful thinking on Mychal’s part or more likely a joke, but that confidence is what allows him to find a spot on this list.
