Los Angeles Lakers rumors
Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports – Los Angeles Lakers /

Who knows? We all know that Rob Pelinka does not talk!

Most Los Angeles Lakers fans may blow this article off as a hot take article known for the “summer quota”. Well you’d be wrong. Remember, Frank Vogel was the fourth choice on the Lakers wish list. Taking the point further, most didn’t know that he was even ON the list!

  • Monty Williams was first on the list. He turned the job down after getting a better offer from Phoenix.
  • Ty Lue was second on the list. The Lakers did not want to give him the five year deal that was standard for head coaches. He went back to the Clippers bench under Doc Rivers before eventually replacing him.
  • Jason Kidd was reportedly wanted by many in the organization. When that got out, his off the court issues in the past kept coming up. He was offered the assistant coach job.

Frank Vogel was hired, but he didn’t get to pick his own staff. The Lakers did that as well. Hence, Vogel does not have the power of most NBA head coaches.

Is his job safe? Not if that extension doesn’t get signed in the offseason. Lame duck status does not work well for coaches in Lakers Nation. It sets up speculation and drama.

Ask Luke Walton.
