Los Angeles Lakers greatest scorers: 15. Norm Nixon
Norm Nixon played six seasons as the point guard for the Lakers in the late 1970s and the early 1980s. Some guy named Magic Johnson ultimately took over that job and ultimately overshadowed Nixon’s contributions to the team at that time, but Nixon was highly productive in his own right. Over those six seasons, Nixon was a quality scoring option in the backcourt and a great role player at the start of the Magic era for the Lakers.
Nixon appeared in 485 games for the Lakers in his career and totaled 7,938 points over that time. That was good for 16.4 points per game over the course of his time with the Lakers, a more than respectable mark with all things considered. Perhaps the most impressive part of his scoring ability was how efficient he was in putting up those numbers, hitting 50 percent of his shots at the points guard position. That’s a great mark for a big man, but it’s absolutely marvelous for a guard to show that level of efficiency.
While Nixon wasn’t even the best point guard on almost all of the Lakers teams that he was a part of, he was productive and great in the role that he played. It’s not a sexy pick to have in the top 15, but it’s Nixon’s earned place in the rankings.
