The potential trade package for Collin Sexton:
We know that both Collin Sexton and Kevin Love will be coming to LA. To make this trade work, the Lakers would have to agree to a sign-and-trade deal with Dennis Schroder, which is most likely anyways due to his asking price.
Dennis Schroder would have to agree to a contract that pays him around $25-28 million per season for this trade to work financially. That is right around what he is asking for and it is likely that he won’t get that in free agency, so he would almost certainly say yes to this deal.
But would both parties agree to this trade? There are reasons why the Lakers should say no. Kevin Love’s contract is really restricting considering his level of play. Building out depth and staying under the tax apron (since they executed a sign-and-trade) would be a tall order.
Meanwhile, the Cavaliers would be taking on a contract in Schroder that is not much better than Kevin Love. If the Cavaliers do not want to offer Collin Sexton a max contract will they really be willing to pay Dennis Schroder 75-80% of a max contract?
You could make the case because they would essentially be paying only Schroder instead of paying both Sexton AND Love.
I think this trade leans slightly in favor of the Lakers and if Rob Pelinka was offered this trade, and had no other super intriguing deals on the table, he should say yes. You hope that Sexton continues to blossom and that Love can regain some form back with LeBron.
A starting five of Collin Sexton, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, LeBron James, Kevin Love and Anthony Davis is pretty good. They would need to re-sign both Alex Caruso and THT for depth and might have to punt on signing an MLE player just so they could stay under the tax apron.
This definitely is not the best possible trade for both sides, but I could see both sides agreeing to this deal as a plan B.
