The Los Angeles Lakers have had themselves quite the offseason. First, the iconic NBA franchise made huge splashes in free agency, trading for Russell Westbrook and signing Carmelo Anthony.
Well, we can add another critical acquisition to their roster, only this time in the business arena. The 17-time NBA champions recently announced that after 25 years, they would be ending their relationship with Gatorade as the team’s official sports drink. Instead, BioSteel — a North American beverage brand — will serve as the official sports drink of the Lakers.
BioSteel was founded in 2009 by Michael Cammalleri and his business partner John Celenza. Cammalleri and Celenza met on a soccer field at a young age, and the rest was history. The two became best friends, and that friendship has morphed into a highly successful business partnership.
I asked Cammalleri where he sees BioSteel in the next 5-10 years, and he said, “I want BioSteel to be a household brand that promotes clean, healthy hydration for people.”
Cammalleri is no stranger to the sports world, having 16 years of professional hockey experience playing on five different teams. But unlike most athletes, Cammalleri didn’t wait to get his feet wet in the business world post-retirement. When he launched BioSteel with Celenza, he was on a five-year contract with the Montreal Canadiens.
That same kind of entrepreneurial spirit has propelled BioSteel to become one of the most trusted brands in locker rooms and households alike.
Having played in the National Hockey League, Cammalleri recognizes the pivotal role a quality sports drink plays in the preparation and recovery of all athletes. “An athlete’s body is their business,” says Cammalleri.
The newly formed partnership between Biosteel and the Lakers marks a new era for the organization and its members.
BioSteel will be supporting the players’ performance on the court with clean, healthy hydration, and maintaining a presence on the team bench, in the locker room, and in-arena signage.
While the Lakers will be rolling out a slew of superstars next season, BioSteel has an All-Star roster of ambassadors as well. NFL stars Patrick Mahomes, Jalen Ramsey, DeAndre Hopkins, and Ezekiel Elliott are among the brand ambassadors for the company. In addition, budding superstar Luka Dončić and Brooklyn Nets head coach Steve Nash are a few of the dynamic sports beverage brand spokespersons.
Finally, I asked Cammalleri where consumers can find and buy BioSteel. He said, “BioSteel is available in Los Angeles at select Targets, independent gas and convenience stores throughout LA, and AMPM stores.
