Pro: Darren Collison is a serviceable defensive player

While the main focus this offseason has been on three-point shooting the defensive side of the ball is also important to the Los Angeles Lakers. This is a team that has had a defensive identity for two years now and it is a big reason why they won the title in 2020.

The team has taken a hit defensive this offseason. Losing Alex Caruso is a huge blow and it is not like the Lakers brought in the most defensive-savvy players. They should still be fine as they have Anthony Davis leading the way, but adding defensive depth will never hurt.

Collison is by no means an elite defender, especially at his age after taking two years off in the league. However, he is someone who was an above-average defensive player in every year of his career and would likely continue that trend back in Frank Vogel’s system.

This is far different than Thomas, who is one of the worst defensive players in the league. If Collison is truly up to speed then it is safe to assume that the offensive output between he and Thomas would be similar.

However, the defensive side of the ball would sway heavily in favor of Collison, making a big difference not only in who the better option is, but how much the Lakers could play Collison.

On paper, Collison fits exactly what the Los Angeles Lakers could want out of signing at this point in the offseason. The question is whether or not he can produce after two years off.
