No. 9: Gail Goodrich – 1971 Western Conference Semifinals
Guard Gail Goodrich spent 14 seasons in the NBA and although he didn’t win his first and only championship until 1972, he was the leading scorer for the Lakers in the Western Conference Semifinals against the Chicago Bulls in 1971. Goodrich had 29 points off of 11-for-20 shooting, nine assists and one rebound in 46 minutes, beating the Bulls 109-98.
Gail attended UCLA and was drafted by the Lakers in 1965 and spent his first three seasons in purple and gold before heading to Phoenix as part of the expansion draft. He made it back to Los Angeles in 1970, leading the Lakers to the Western Conference Finals. The five-time NBA All-Star led the Lakers in scoring from 1971-1975, but the Los Angeles team in 1971 couldn’t overcome the Milwaukee Bucks in the Western Conference Finals.
Goodrich averaged 17.5 points and 4.8 assists during the 1970-71 season. During the playoffs, he averaged 25.4 points and 7.6 assists over the course of 12 games. Gail was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1996 and his dazzling jump shot is remembered every time a fan looks up in the rafters and sees his No. 25 hanging in the Staples Center.
