Los Angeles Lakers free agency
Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports – Los Angeles Lakers /

Even if the Los Angeles Lakers are able to trade Russell Westbrook this offseason the team is going to be limited in what it can do in free agency after that. If Westbrook is indeed traded then the Lakers would be taking on a similar contract(s) in return, meaning that the team will still be over the luxury tax.

For the second season in a row, the Lakers are going to be reduced to targeting minimum players with just one spending tool, the Taxpayer Mid-Level Exception, to utilize. However, that may have to be used on Malik Monk, who upped his value with the Lakers this past season.

Monk was the absolute best-case scenario for a minimum player. Monk played to his potential and proved to be a huge boom for the team. However, there was a world in which the same problems in Charlotte followed him and he would have been a bust of a signing. There was a lot of volatility in the Monk signing.

The Los Angeles Lakers may have to target these boom or bust free agents once more.

While the bust part of the equation is obviously less than ideal for the Los Angeles Lakers, it is not like the team has many choices. Beggars can’t be choosers and the Lakers are going to have to take some risks if they are actually going to put together a title-contending team. Los Angeles is not going to do so by signing bad minimum players with lower ceilings but higher floors.

There are two free agents, in particular, that have massive boom-or-bust outcomes that the Los Angeles Lakers should be targeting this offseason.
