3. It is much more likely that the Lakers get more players than they send out in a trade

There are multiple trades the Los Angeles Lakers could try and make this offseason. The biggest deal is obviously for Kyrie Irving but it does seem like the Lakers have been exploring backup plans (as they should) in case that does not pan out. A deal with the Indiana Pacers could happen as well as the team working with both the Knicks and Jazz.

Regardless of what the team does, it seems more likely than not that the Lakers would be acquiring more players than they would be sending out. That obviously fills up the roster and those creative ways to create roster space would go to these traded players instead.

Someone like Wenyen Gabriel or Stanley Johnson could be included in these deals or outright waived just to make roster space for these new players. These players could have a much bigger impact on LA than any free agent would.

If the Lakers pull off a trade for Kyrie there is a decent chance that they would have to at least take back Joe Harris as the Nets do not want to take on more salary in a Kyrie deal.

If Los Angeles makes a trade for the Indiana Pacers that is a Westbrook dump they will get two players in return in Myles Turner and Buddy Hield. Even if the Lakers work with the Knicks and Jazz they would likely be taking on more players than they are sending out.

That is the nature of the beast when the Lakers are trading a $47 million salary and that keeps the team from adding in other areas. Perhaps this is why the team has not made any more moves to this point as they want to keep that open spot for more flexibility just in case.
