The Los Angeles Lakers were finally starting to gain some semblance of momentum this season before the rug was completely pulled out. Anthony Davis injured his foot, with an indefinite timeline provided that left the Lakers in the dark.

There have been conflicting updates about Davis. At first, many assumed the worst and expected the injury to hold him out longer than any fan would have preferred. AD’s timeframe continued to get muddied when it was reported before Christmas that he would be out “indefinitely”.

Shams Charania finally gave Lakers fans an update on Wednesday that gives them some clarity, even if it means Davis being out longer than fans had hoped. Shams said on FanDuel’s ‘Run it Back’ that Davis will “definitely” be out until mid-January.

Mid-January feels like eons away with how this team is playing right now, but fans at least can know how many games Davis is going to miss at the minimum. Fans can avoid getting their hopes up that Davis might make an early January return to save this team.

The Los Angeles Lakers have look lost after the Anthony Davis injury.

Anthony Davis was playing at an insanely high level and we all knew how important he was to this team. Yet still, his injury has still highlighted that he was perhaps even more important than we could have ever given him credit for.

This looks like a completely different basketball team without Anthony Davis. While they have been able to win some games, it has become abundantly clear that this team is not good enough to string together wins without its best player.

The longer that Davis is out the less and less likely that the Lakers will make the playoffs. If this injury extends past mid-January and trickles into February then the season could be over before Davis even returns.

All the Lakers need to do right now is stay afloat. They are not going to go on some long winning streak with Davis out of commission but if they can at least stay in the picture then they have a chance to get hot at the end of the season and at least make the playoffs.

As it stands, Los Angeles is 13th in the Western Conference and is 2.5 games out of being in the play-in. The team is 4.5 games back from being the sixth seed in the Western Conference, so staying in the picture is doable.
