Lakers' most glaring needs after the first wave of free agency

The Los Angeles Lakers remained quiet during the first wave of free agency. There remain areas in which the Lakers must improve to contend.

Three-Point Shooting

There's a trend developing here, as the Los Angeles Lakers were effectively their own worst enemy in 2023-24. Similar to the offensive rebounding dilemma, Los Angeles had the tools to thrive as a three-point shooting team, but somehow found a way to fall behind the curve.

In 2023-24, head coach JJ Redick will need to figure out how he can get the Lakers to the point of shooting consistently from distance.

Los Angeles finished the 2023-24 regular season ranked No. 8 in the NBA in three-point field goal percentage. That fact would suggest that the Lakers were one of the best in the Association in one of the most important areas of the game.

Instead, Los Angeles was No. 24 in three-point field goals made—due entirely to the fact that it ranked 28th in three-point field goal attempts.

Redick has made it clear that the Lakers will shoot more threes during the 2024-25 season. The personnel in place could accomplish that goal, as there are a number of high-quality shooters on the roster, including incoming rookie Dalton Knecht.

It would be difficult to fault general manager Rob Pelinka, however, if he ultimately decided to make a move to address this weakness—even if simply shooting more could do the trick.
