The Los Angeles Lakers will look different this season as new head coach J.J. Redick brings plenty of fresh ideas. He wants Anthony Davis shooting more 3-pointers and has rookie Dalton Knecht looking ready for minutes. The 15-year NBA veteran turned coach has a plan to maximize Austin Reaves too.
Fans expected the 26-year-old to breakout last season after his stint with Team USA, but it never fully happened. Reaves did not reach star level, despite improving in his third NBA season. Redick’s plan involves more on-ball reps and opportunities for the 6’5 wing, which are needed after his improved playmaking last season.
Fans can already see a transformation in the first two preseason games, despite two losses. Reaves does not have his shot dialed in, but these two numbers trending up should excite supporters.
Austin Reaves has increased usage as part of coach Redick’s vision
Fans should not overreact to anything that happens in the preseason. The players are just ramping up and finding their footing. The Lakers are still grasping coach Redick’s system and need some time to iron things out. Their two losses mean zero, but Reaves is producing some interesting numbers.
He is averaging 12.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 7.0 assists, and 2.5 steals in 26.6 minutes per game contest. Reaves had seven dimes in each contest and has been to the free throw line 15 times. He shot just 3.3 freebies per game last season after averaging 4.1 per night in 2023.
Fans wanting Reaves to average 20 points per game may get their wish. Adding in three or four free points each night from the line will certainly boost his scoring average. Coach Redick praised the 6’5 wing's ability when talking about his efficiency in an expanded role.
“He’s going to figure out ways to get to the free throw line. He has a unique talent because of his level of basketball intelligence to get to the free throw line.”
The change is happening before our eyes. Fans have certainly seen more aggressiveness from Reaves and an increased workload. If he produces his preseason averages in the 32.1 minutes he played last season, the 26-year-old would be putting 8.4 assists and 9.1 free throw attempts per game. That likely means averaging 20 points each night and truly becoming a breakout star.
J.J. Redick’s plan is taking shape, but this is just the beginning. Expect Reaves to start hitting shots and getting more comfortable with the ball. He has committed just two turnovers in preseason and is ready to thrive in his new role. The early trends are positive, but the best is yet to come.
The Los Angeles Lakers need an Austin Reaves breakout to have any shot at seriously contending this season. Coach Redick believes it can become reality, but only time will tell. Reaves is certainly a player to watch closely as the games begin to count, so stay tuned.
