Lakers News: Byron Scott wants Lakers shooting less threes

Under Mike D’Antoni, the Lakers broke franchise records for three-point shooting.

Byron Scott wants those days to be long gone.

Scott wants the purple and gold to be shooting, at most, 15 threes a night, a stark contrast from the days under D’Antoni when the Lakers averaged nearly double that a contest.

"“Our game plan is really to get to that basket,” said Scott after practice Tuesday.  “I like the fact that we only shot 10 threes.  If we shoot between 10 and 15, I think that’s a good mixture of getting to that basket and shooting threes.“I don’t want us to be coming down, forcing up a bunch of threes.  I really want us to attack the basket.”"

It’s hard to argue with Scott’s mindset for many reasons. D’Antoni’s up-tempo, quick shot offense led to some historic blow-outs for the Lakers, who struggled to both make shots and get back on defense following the long rebounds from long threes.

On top of that, this Lakers unit isn’t going to be one filled with three-point shooters. The Lakers best deep-ball weapon, Jodie Meeks, left this past summer. In fact, six of the top seven three-point shooters from last year’s squad are not on the team this year, and the one returning is the injured Nick Young.

Personnel-wise, this is a Lakers team full of big men, so Scott’s philosophy of attacking the basket makes all the more sense.
