Rumors: Los Angeles Lakers have interest in Josh Smith

After the Detroit Pistons shocked the NBA world by waiving forward Josh Smith, teams began lining up to eventually offer for his services. While it’s very unlikely anyone makes a claim on Smith, the forward will likely sign with a team once he clears waivers, with the Lakers being one of the teams interested in his services.

"Smith will clear waivers after 5 p.m. EST on Wednesday, provided the Philadelphia 76ers (the only team with enough cap space) don’t place a claim.A number of teams are believed to covet Smith, including the Houston Rockets, Dallas Mavericks, Miami Heat, Sacramento Kings and Clippers. The Lakers (8-19) are searching for players who could help improve a talent-thin roster."

  • The Lakers, as stated in the article as well, have the benefit of being able to offer more than most teams given the possession of a disabled player exception from Steve Nash‘s back injury, totaling $4.85 million.

However, the disadvantage the Lakers have is that they are not a competing team. With teams like the Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks contending for his services, if Smith is looking for a competitive team, the Lakers will be at the bottom of his list. On the same note, Smith is good friends with Rajon Rondo of the Mavs and Dwight Howard of the Rockets, making those teams that much more likely.
