Lakers: Byron Scott On Ignoring ‘Angry Fans’

Lakers head coach Byron Scott continues to issue questionable statements to the media

In a recent interview the Lakers head coach was asked about the frustration many fans have begun to felt with his methods. Byron Scott responded in precisely the manner that has become familiar and irritating to Laker fans in the past few years.

Scott stated the he doesn’t “pay a whole lot of attention to fans because fans are fans”, before pointing out that his knowledge of the situation is far superior to theirs.

This is, of course, true in most cases. Fans tend to overreact and coaching an NBA team is far more difficult than most people know.

Unfortunately, in this case, Scott might do well to listen to the fans, who seem to be figuring things out far faster than the coach. Even with his “far superior knowledge,” Scott has managed to make a string of impossibly poor decisions.

Where the interview truly becomes comical however, is when Byron Scott praises fans who continue to be patient with the team.

"Then you’ve got some that are very supportive that say, ‘Hey, we know it’s a process. We know it’s going to take a few years.’ But this is L.A. You want to win right away"

Byron Scott’s recent decisions and comments make this quote too ironic for words.

The coach who arrived in Los Angeles speaking of championships, who repeatedly stated that he was concerned about this season and not the future, who cut young players for veterans, and who continues to play those veterans over young players, has now decided to criticize fans for being impatient and short-sighted.

The problem is, the fans criticizing him are doing so because he has been impatient. Most fans would have been happy to watch a young, developing team grow together and make progress, but Byron Scott had other plans.

This season should have been an exciting step forward for the Lakers, and instead fans are forced to watch an amalgamation of veterans who fans can desperately hope are gone by the end of the season.

Fans are having no problem understanding that this is a process, but it sure seems like Scott and the front office are struggling with it.

Perhaps if they payed a little more attention to the fans they would know that.
