Holding Court in Phoenix
This one had a playoff feel. And if it was a playoff test then the Lakers passed. Maybe not the most impressive performance but by recent standards an A+ by all means.
The Lake Show did what champions are supposed to by setting the tone early. A 16-0 run in the first quarter highlighted by solid defense that actually led to…gasp…transition buckets provided an early lead. Eventually that lead slowly disappeared and it looked like we were looking at another meltdown.
But then, something happened. When Phoenix took the lead in the third there was no sense of panic. Just a clam resolve in Phil Jackson’s men that rose to the task.
After a dismal defensive third, the Purple and Gold defense took over in the fourth. Oh, and for good measure Ron Artest sunk a clutch shot late to seal the deal.
As the Los Angeles drama builds it seems like more Hollywood endings emerge.
Not saying the Lakers are back by any means. But this was a solid effort all the way around. Sad that at this point we’re satisfied just to see hustle and commitment but hey, this is the kind of stuff champs must do. The problem is getting it on a nightly basis.
Here is what is crazy though. We’re still not seeing a true sample of what this team can do. Kobe had an efficient and effective night scoring 24 on 17 shots with 7 boards and 5 dimes. But Pau is still MIA. The Spaniard was only good for 6 points on 10 shots. However, he did pull down 9 boards and had a big block late.
Good thing Lamar Odom’s eyes light up when he sees the Suns. LO had a double-double off the bench (12 and 10) including some clutch boards and shots in key moments throughout the second half.
Ok, there is still work to be done but this was a good response to all the questions that have been asked in the last couple days. Now it’s time to keep that chip on the shoulder and carry it forward to gain some much needed momentum. This wasn’t a playoff game but for a contest in January there was some June intensity. Exactly the wake up call this team needs.
