Pau Gasol Changes His Mind on Playing Overseas

Can’t say we didn’t see this coming. I think we all knew the NBA season was in jeopardy the moment the lockout began. Both sides were as far apart as the McCourts so getting a deal done was always going to be a longshot.

What is also not too shocking is that in the wake of the union choosing to dissolve and sue is that Pau Gasol is rethinking his immediate hoops future.

Not too long ago Gasol stated his desire to remain in the state despite the lockout then. Then Pau played for Spain in the EuroBasket championships. After getting crowned as Europe’s best once again, Gasol opted to remain in his native land just to get in a little practice with his former club.

Now comes word that Gasol’s European vacation could be turning into a staycation.

Gasol has changed his tune now that the reality of no NBA season is setting. Gasol stated that both he and his brother would play for Barcelona should the axe fall on the 2011-12 season.

I guess we might as well forget about running into Pau at a Whole Foods on the Westside anytime soon. While Gasol remains optimistic he’s also got to be realistic. It doesn’t seem like a deal will get done now considering all the other threats made to help push this process along. Now that the union is going the legal route the season hinges on the timeline of the court.

Enjoy Spain, Pau. All we ask is that you come back healthy whenever the Lakers and the rest of the league get back in business.
