Lakers Back in the Shannon Brown Market

As you’d expect Mitch Kupchak is back in business as the league allowed teams to begin talks with player agents today. As you’d also expect GM Mitch has put his feelers out on free agent Shannon Brown.

Hummm…where have we heard this before?

Oh…that’s right! This is the same song and dance the Lake Show seems to go through with ShanWow every offseason since he’s become a Laker. However things are much different this time.

Obviously this is not going to be your normal NBA offseason. No doubt Shannon has designs on getting the best payday of his career. While that is very much a reality there is no chance of him clocking Luke Walton scratch. Not any longer.

Instead, if the Lakers and Shannon are looking to get in bed again then the only recourse Kupchak will have available is the mini-mid level exception. As reported by Mike Bresnahan that deal would be good for three years and a total of $9.4-million. On both accounts they would be the most lucrative and longest contract of Shannon’s career.

It’s no secret that the Lakers need an upgrade at the point. With the market being thinner than one of Shaun Livingston’s sticks, the Lakers are likely looking to re-sign Shannon to play his customary combo guard position off the pine.

While there is no official word as of yet on any talks it stands to reason that this is a move the Lakers must make or at least owe it to themselves to explore.
