Continuing to pursue other options in free agency while the Dwight Howard deal inches along, the Lakers are said to be considering Delonte West as their next target. The combo guard could be a valuable asset off the bench for the Lakers…that’s if he’s willing to accept the veteran’s minimum on a one-year deal.
According to ESPN.com the Lakers are unlikely to use their mini-mid level exception on West. With no other options available due to cap constraints that would leave the veteran’s minimum as the only other means to get West into purple and gold.
That pretty much doesn’t seem like something West would be willing to do. Not when he’s said to be in the market for a multiyear deal and especially not when he’s interested in re-signing with the Mavs.
Once again Mitch Kupchak is going to have to sell ice to Mr. Freeze. Convincing West that taking a deal that amounts to pennies in the L.A. market to play for a team that isn’t exactly in the championship conversation is going to be a tough task. But the Lakers could certainly use the services of a combo guard like Delonte. They could also stand to do without any of the drama that has followed West around during his eight year NBA career.
