Of all the awkward subjects for a celebrity roast Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has to be right up with Kim Jong-Il. Am I putting too much on that? I don’t think so.
Not when you consider the absolute irony of Cap being roasted right after the unveiling of his statue at Staples Center. A statute he openly campaigned for.
But that’s exactly what will happen on the same night Kareem gets his immortalization. George Lopez is slated to host the celebrity roast which will take place at the Ritz-Carlton Downtown.
Perhaps somebody should pull the prickly Abdul-Jabbar aside and explain to him what exactly a roast is. Something tells me Cap is expecting a meal with roast duck or chicken being the main course. No way Kareem signed off on being the focus of everyone’s ire for an evening. I mean dude can barely give you the time of day without being snarky, how is he going to respond to a night of insults?
Don’t get me wrong. I’m all for this. I’m sure there are plenty of people in this town that have been dying for the opportunity to tell Abdul-Jabbar exactly how they feel. In many ways it will be cathartic. Just don’t be surprised when the audience pauses from their laughter having realized Kareem has stormed off. Likely you’ll be able to find him at Staples, beneath his likeness, consoling his statue while he sobs uncontrollably. A magical night for all, no doubt.
