Chad Ford released his 6th mock version of the 2013 NBA Draft, but the first one including the 2nd round. This means this is the first time he’s predicted the Lakers draft pick. In this version, Ford predicted the Lakers would take point guard Ray McCallum, point guard from Detroit Universtiy.
"The Lakers could use help anywhere, but McCallum brings a lot to the table as a heady point guard who can run a team and get to the rim."
Personally, this pick doesn’t make a lot of sense. Let me say that I really McCallum as a player and think he could find a spot on an NBA team. He averaged 18.7 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 4.5 assists a game last season on 49% field goal shooting and 32% three point shooting. However, I’m not sure how or where he’d fit on the Lakers.
At 6’3, 190 lbs., McCallum is certainly too small to play the shooting guard role, relegating him to the point guard spot. Currently, five point guards on the roster – Steve Nash, Steve Blake, Darius Morris, Chris Duhon, and Andrew Goudelock. I do think McCallum is a better prospect than Duhon and Morris, and if the Lakers can move or release them, this might make some more sense. However, given the current roster, there are a lot better options out there.
