A D’Antoni brother is indeed leaving the Lakers for a coaching job in the NCAA, but it isn’t the one many expect (or want). Mike D’Antoni, for now, is staying put in LA while his brother Dan is expected to take over the head coaching job for Marshall University.
Dan most recently – and most notably to Lakers fans – coached the team’s summer league squad and has served as an assistant coach for the Lakers since his brother Mike took over two years ago. Dan also coached under his brother in New York and Phoenix, but is probably most successful in the high school ranks, where he spent 30 years at Socastee High School in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. In his time there, he amassed over 500 wins.
For the time being, this means little for Mike D’Antoni’s future. The immediate impact is an open assistant coaching spot for Mike to fill, assuming he is coach next season. Some of the potential head coaches could also be assistant coaching candidates, like Byron Scott or Derek Fisher.
