It’s been a rough-and-tumble 12 months for our former draft outcast, Wesley Johnson. After L.A. rolled the dice on the fourth pick in the summer of 2013, few expected Johnson to make grand contributions to the team’s win count, but soon, eager to stamp his authority on the roster, Wes’ versatility, athleticism and lock-down defensive skills became valuable assets to a team facing damnation.
This week, Dave Miller (TWC Sports Net Reporter) was able to catch Wesley for a quick interview on the prospects of this Lakers roster, his role last year and how he wishes to improve, Byron Scott and what drew him back to the Purple and Gold.
"On what made him want to remain a Laker.“After the end of the season and the way it ended, I always wanted to be a part of something.”“Just being in the Staples Center, the loyalty from the fans; I definitely didn’t want to stray too far away from that.”"
Johnson modestly self-congratulated his abilities last season, especially in regards to his sporadic appearances at the four.
"On what he did last season that lured the Lakers into re-signing him.“I did a lot of things. In think that they want to see me do a lot more.”“Talking to Mitch, he wanted to see me just erupt and emerge on the scene.”On playing the four.“I think that it showed my versatility. Playing the four, guarding fours as well, it was a new challenge for me. I think I did well at it.”"
As well as commenting on his own form, Johnson was quizzed regarding the arrival of Byron Scott as Head Coach.
"On Byron Scott.“I’m actually excited about it. He’ll bring that defensive mindset that we need.”“We have a lot of people that can score the ball. If everyone buys into the defensive side of the ball, I think that’s what’s going to push up and take us to the next step.”"
And, as is always the case in Laker Nation, championships were a hot topic.
"On Byron’s history.“He was with the Magic’s and the Worthy’s, playing with them and watching them play.”“He won three titles, so I think he can bring that winning atmosphere to the team; it’s something that we need.”"
At the age of 27, this really is a make or break season for a man who’s NBA career was in serious danger of fizzling away into irrelevancy. In 2014, Wesley Johnson proved that he can be a useful player. Now, he has to prove his worth all over again.
