The Lakers got some bad news on Tuesday by not receiving any update at all. Current starting point guard Steve Nash did not practice and the Lakers fear it’s a situation similar to last season’s.
Last year saw Nash unable to play in back-to-back contests and, at best, could hardly manage more than one game a week. Hopefully, the Lakers are wrong in this regard and Nash will be able to play consistently this season.
However, whether a result of Nash’s questionable health or his level of play, Jeremy Lin has not been counted out as the starting point guard, according to Byron Scott.
Many felt Lin should have been the starting point guard from day 1, regardless of Nash’s health. However, Scott originally went with the veteran as starter in game one. Lin relished his role as the leader of the second unit, dishing out 10 assists in the first preseason game.
The second contest saw Lin move into the starting role and look more comfortably in terms of scoring, scoring 14 points on 4-4 shooting from the field and 5-6 from the free throw line.
While he was out in the last contest because of injury, if he can suit up on Thursday, he’ll win the job by default as it’s growing more unlikely that Nash can make a return.
With Lin as starter, the Lakers get noticeably younger and more athletic. While Lin may not offer the same court vision, he offers a better chance at creating his own shot and is more likely to beat players off the dribble. He may not be a plus defender, but anything is better than the effort Nash can put forth even at his highest level of health this year.
Do you think Lin should be the starter for this Lakers team? Should Nash retire? Let us know down below!
