Although the narrative would be that the two stars of the Lakers and Celtics respectively should hate one another, Kobe Bryant and Rajon Rondo shared breakfast this morning in Boston.
It has been noted in the past that Rondo and Bryant share at least a mutual respect. Bryant could be recruiting the future free agent already, or just catching up with a friend. Either way, the rumor mill will start.
The Rondo-to-Lakers rumors have long been around, dating back many years. Most notably, a trade involving Pau Gasol and Rondo was rumored during Gasol’s tenure in LA. However, no trade talks seriously materialized and the two rivals were left with nothing.
Now, with Rondo likely on his way out of Boston this summer in free agency, the trade rumors are ramping up once again. The Lakers are finally starting to stockpile assets. Aside from rookies Julius Randle and Jordan Clarkson, the Lakers have a first round pick from Houston this year as well as expiring contracts in Jordan Hill and Jeremy Lin.
However, this could be another case of Dwight Howard all over again, meaning the Lakers move assets for a player only to watch him walk away the following summer. Furthermore, a trade for Rondo could very well make the Lakers competitive enough to lose their first round pick.
If you were the Lakers, would you trade for Rondo? Let us know in the comments below.
