In the closing minutes of Tuesday night’s contest between the Lakers and Kings, Byron Scott sported a different line-up with Kobe Bryant running the point with Wayne Ellington and Wesley Johnson as the other perimeter players.
After the game and even more after today’s practice, Scott said this will be commonplace over the next handful of games.
Over the last two games, we’ve seen Bryant playing more and more time at the point guard spot, namely because the struggles from Ronnie Price and Jeremy Lin in their new roles. The two have combined for 2 of 19 shooting from the field and neither have succeeded in their new spots.
Bryant leads the team in assists per game as well as usage rate, both signs of his role as playmaker for this team. Any move to the point guard role would be merely a formality as Bryant is more often than not the facilitator offensively for this team.
Off the court and on it as well, Bryant has empowered Lin to take a leadership role both in his play and vocally, a role that Lin has resisted to accepting, which has led to his demotion to the bench as he’s not meshed well with Bryant on the court.
