Rajon Rondo was rumored to be in trade with the Lakers, but now the deal is nearly finalized with the Mavericks. It’s alright. The Lakers have bigger fish to fry.
The organization gets criticized for not having a vision or any kind of plan. Well, how is a plan possible when free agents cannot be spoken to until the off-season? The general plan is very simple. There’s max contract space available to the Lakers at the end of this season if they want it. There’s max contract space available at the end of next season if they want it.

Otherwise, they are going to explore the best possible options for the organization.
That option did not include Rajon Rondo.
Think about it. Rajon Rondo is in his NBA prime in terms of age in the NBA. His torn ACL injury affected him like it did Kobe Bryant. Sure, he’s a bit slower yet every bit as capable. What hurt him the most? Field goal percentage.
Right now, the Lakers have their own point guard who could be considered ball-dominant, yet, it hasn’t worked. Jeremy Lin has been inconsistent this season, and it seems to be a reflection of which Kobe Bryant is going to play that day. Over 20 games in, and the Lakers haven’t figured it out.
Don’t get me wrong. Rajon Rondo is one of my favorite point guards. He’s underrated because of his lack of consistency from the perimeter, but he fills up a stat sheet everywhere else like Magic Johnson.
But, can you build around him? Is he a cornerstone piece to a franchise?
I don’t think so, and that’s likely why the Lakers wanted Jeff Green as well if they were going to include Jordan Hill in the trade.
