Lakers Waive Xavier Henry, Claim Tarik Black

The Los Angeles Lakers made two moves on Sunday, first waiving guard/forward Xavier Henry to make space for Tarik Black, who they claimed off waivers.
The Lakers needed to make a roster spot for Black, who was waived by the Rockets in order to make room for forward Josh Smith, whom they signed late last week. On the season, Black is averaging 4.2 points and 5.1 rebounds on 15.7 minutes a night. He did show flashes of potential, reaching double figures in points three times and netting one double-double, but he was the victim of the Rockets reaching a deal with Smith as a opening up a roster spot was necessary.
Similarly, Henry is the victim of the same circumstances in this case. The youngster had a small breakout season last year but was hampered by injuries too much, resulting in season-ending surgeries and a return to the Lakers at the veterans minimum. However, after struggling to regain his form this year, he suffered a ruptured Achilles in practice in late November, ending his season and putting his career in jeopardy.
With the Lakers short on talent and looking toward the future, the 23-year old Black offers a unique prospect going forward. At 6’11”, he’s a big body that can develop into something nice. This could also be a sort of pre-cursor to any possible trades the Lakers may make with Jordan Hill or Ed Davis in the coming weeks.
