NBA Trade Deadline: Lakers Interested In Ty Lawson

The Los Angeles Lakers have been one of the teams more heavily linked to players as the NBA Trade Deadline approaches. The latest name to surface is Denver Nuggets point guard and speedster Ty Lawson, who Chris Broussard reports is drawing interest from LA.

Lawson is an intriguing player. The 27-year old is in his sixth year in the league, all with the Nuggets. This season, he’s averaging 16.9 points and a career-high 10.1 assists while shooting 44.7% from the field and 36% from deep. However, he is on the hook for for $12.4 million next season and $13.2 the following year, which is certainly not an extreme figure.

If traded to the Lakers, Lawson would be a very nice piece going forward for the future. However, it would require what Zach Lowe of Grantland referred to as a “godfather” offer.

"The sense around the league is that you could land Lawson or Faried with a Godfather offer. They are gettable. Boston and Denver have had exploratory talks about Lawson, per several sources."

With the Lakers intent on maintaining flexibility this summer, this trade does seem quizzical. Lawson might be on a nice contract, but he would massively eat into the Lakers potential cap space this summer and certainly would end any runs at a max-contract free agent.

However, he is a special talent who can change a game. For many fans, his 32-point, 16-assist performance against the Lakers is still fresh on their minds. While he’s had some injury concerns, for a Laker team devoid of talent, this could be an interesting move.
