Steve Nash has been mysteriously absent from the Lakers organization since he decided to “shut it down” before the season started.
Jordan Clarkson has been in contact with him via text throughout the season, but over the All-Star break they got together and worked out. Clarkson is more of a combo guard who prefers to shoot first, so it makes sense that Nash would help him with his passing ability and fundamentals.
Once Nash made his decision to skip this season, this type of mentorship is what Lakers fans envisioned for him especially since he’s still on contract to make $9.7 million this season. It didn’t start out well with Nash not returning Byron Scott‘s phone calls earlier in the season and occasionally meeting with Mitch Kupchak for updates. It’s also suspect that he hasn’t reached out to Jeremy Lin or Ronnie Price to help them develop either.

The lack of communication from Nash hasn’t been great for his image or the Lakers organization. We don’t know all the details, but from the outside, it’s confusing. At this point, the silver lining is Nash is helping Clarkson. In a symbolic gesture it’s a “passing of the torch” moment from old to new. Clarkson may not become the starting point guard of the Lakers for the future, but he does have massive potential and is part of the Lakers plans moving forward.
To be fair to Nash, the rehabilitation process over the past 3 years has been grueling both physically and mentally on him. Once a two-time MVP, his body failed him in his latter years. In retrospect, it wasn’t a wise decision by Jim Buss to acquire him as a 38-year old veteran with back issues, but that’s water under the bridge at this point.
With the trade deadline passing today, Nash will be a part of the Lakers until the season ends so whatever “value” we can get out of him at this point is a positive thing. In a season where the Lakers have been ravaged by injuries and the talent level isn’t competitive let’s take a moment to look towards the future with hope. Steve Nash may be the most expensive tutor in the world, but at least he’s investing in the Lakers future.
