Lakers Rumors: Rajon Rondo Unhappy in Dallas?

Ever since the “breakfast meeting” between Kobe Bryant and Rajon Rondo in Boston, there’s been speculation it was more than just sharing a meal together.

Rondo ended up being traded to the Dallas Mavericks back in December, but it hasn’t been completely smooth sailing since. For example, in Tuesday’s win against the Toronto Raptors, Rondo and Coach Rick Carlisle had a heated exchange during the 3rd quarter which resulted in him being benched the rest of the game, then the two continued the discussion in the locker room resulting in a 1 game suspension:

Bryant hasn’t been shy about his admiration for Rondo. Fans highlight his lack of outside shooting ability, but his court vision and defensive prowess is what Bryant admires. Rondo also has an edge to him, an arrogance that defies logic at times. Most players that have almost gone to blows with Bryant fit great as teammates with him.

The concern is how much the Lakers are willing to offer him in free agency. The Lakers are reportedly willing to offer Goran Dragic 4 years/$80 Million. That’s way too much. In a guard-dominated league, it’s still the big man who wins the rings. Rondo would be a good fit alongside Bryant because he would distribute the ball and find open teammates for easy shots.

Of course this is all speculation, yet the Lakers are monitoring the “rental” point guards in the NBA that will be free agents in the summer. The Lakers are in desperate need of a floor general who can run the team and be an extension of Byron Scott‘s offense. Don’t forget that Coach Scott is used to having great point guards (Jason Kidd, Chris Paul, and Kyrie Irving) run his system and thrive in it.

The Lakers have learned through the failed experiment with Dwight Howard that it’s not always the best talent that’s the missing piece to win a championship. Rondo may not be the best point guard in the league, but he’s definitely above average and much better than what the Lakers currently have. Outside of Magic Johnson, the Lakers haven’t needed an elite point guard to win championships. Hopefully the Lakers will prioritize acquiring a great center first, then see who’s left at the point guard spot.

If the Lakers recruit Rajon Rondo to join them, do you think he would be a good fit?
