The Lakers are looking for talent anywhere they can find it. Jabari Brown is a clear-cut successful pick up for the Laker team. A few of us thought he should have never been cut since the beginning of the season. The Lakers are giving Dwight Buycks a look as well.
The 6’3″ point guard was a standout during the Vegas Pro League of 2013. He showed perimeter range, good quickness, and solid playmaking ability. The Toronto Raptors signed him to a two-year deal. He has spent the past couple of seasons between the D-League and international play.

Most recently, for the Oklahoma City Blue, he averaged 18.2 points per game, 7.1 rebounds per game, and 6.5 assists per game with 3.1 turnovers per game. His field goal percentage in the D-league dropped to 42.7%, but his increased responsibility as a scorer led to five more shots per game. His 3-point percentage increased to 38.5% as well.
His best attribute as a point guard is the ability to attack the basket out of high pick-and-roll situations. He has a propensity to drive left with quickness. With a solid first-step and good length, he is able to finish effectively around the basket.
Why would the Lakers make this move so late in the season? As mentioned earlier, the Lakers are looking for talent anywhere they can find it. Tarik Black was an excellent pick up mid-season, and he has established himself as a formidable player in the paint. Jordan Clarkson developed a more cerebral game, with concise moves and decision-making out of pick-and-roll situations. Jabari Brown, Clarkson’s teammate, showed opportunistic ability to attack the basket, but his upper body strength allowed him to finish against contact under the basket. His jumpshot has been proven.
The latest injury to Wayne Ellington means he needs to rest while other players get a shot at filling out the roster. Who knows? There may be young, developing talent the Lakers are trying to acquire to set up the roster for next season.
Let’s see if Dwight Buycks can succeed.
