Abdul-Jabbar underwent quadruple bypass surgery on April 16th and it was successful. Unfortunately, Abdul-Jabbar experienced some dizziness and had to be re-admitted to the UCLA Medical Center to monitor the problem more closely.
The following statement comes from Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center on behalf of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar:
"This morning, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was experiencing some dizziness following his April 16 quadruple bypass surgery. He contacted his physicians who told him to come to the emergency department at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. He was evaluated by his surgeon and cardiologist. After a battery of tests, they found no complications. Abdul-Jabbar was discharged from the emergency department and is back home continuing his recovery. His surgeon, Dr. Richard Shemin, said it is not uncommon for patients to experience some symptoms that require ruling out serious problems following major heart surgery. Shemin added that Abdul-Jabbar did the right thing by coming in to see his doctors."
It’s good to be cautious and in this case Abdul-Jabbar did the smart thing. By monitoring his symptoms, they were able to run several test and clear him so he can return to his home and continue his recovery.
With UCLA’s best taking care of the Captain, hopefully we will see back to normal soon. At this point Abdul-Jabbar just needs time to rest and recover. At 68 years old, Abdul-Jabbar still has plenty of years to cheer for the purple and gold.
