Now, everybody assumes the Lakers will take one of the two big men that are rated number one and two in most draft boards. Karl Anthony-Towns and Jahlil Okafor are considered special talents and as well all know, big men are hard to come by.
For the Lakers, the decision of whom to select at number two is not as clear as you think. According to Mike Trudell of TWC SportsNet, Mitch Kupchak will consider four to eight players for the number two pick:
It would be surprising if the Lakers didn’t go big with their selection, but players like Emmanuel Mudiay and D’Angelo Russell make this decision even harder. Russell and Mudiay could be special players and the Lakers might not want to pass up the opportunity.
The same could be said for Okafor and Towns. How can the Lakers pass on landing a franchise big man? Yes, it’s a guard dominated league, but only because players like Okafor and Towns do not come around that often.
Kupchak has been doing this a long time and knows he can’t flat-out say what intentions the Lakers have with this draft selection. However, rest assured Kupchak will maximize this pick and don’t be surprised if he makes a move at some point.
