Could the Lakers shock the world and pass up a potential franchise center? Players like Stanley Mudiay and D’Angelo Russell could make a case for the second pick, so the Lakers will have to do their homework and make a decision that could dictate the next 10 to 15 years of this franchise.
The NBA is now a guard dominated league. Mudiay and Russell both have the potential of becoming the next great guard and the Lakers want to see for themselves. According to Adam Zagoria of ZagsBlog.com, Larry Brown said Mudiay will workout for the Lakers at some point to make a case for the second pick:
Brown recruited Mudiay out of high school and the prospect was supposed to attend Southern Methodist University until he decided to head overseas to become a pro. Brown raved about Mudiay, calling him one of the best young prospects he has ever seen.
Mudiay’s lone year overseas was underwhelming and injuries seemed to be the problem. Still, Mudiay is still a projected top five overall pick, but at one point he was seen as the possible number one pick. While that is no longer the case, the Lakers still need consider Mudiay and give him a fair assessment.
