While the Lakers seem to have an easy decision to make between two promising big men in the upcoming draft, it’s still crucial that they do their due diligence with all potential prospects. So, news that Murray State point guard Cameron Payne is working out for the Lakers shouldn’t come as a surprise.
This, via Yahoo’s Marc J. Spears:
Payne’s draft stock has absolutely skyrocketed recently, as executives have raved about his game. He averaged more than 20 points and 6 assists per game shooting 50% from the field and 37% from three. Anyone drafting Payne would hope he follows in Damian Lillard’s footsteps as a mid-major point guard who enters the league and provides an immediate impact.

The pick doesn’t make much sense for the Lakers, however, unless they are completely blown away by the workout a la the Orlando Magic and Anfernee Hardaway. Jordan Clarkson appears ready to take a step forward as the starting point guard and it doesn’t make much sense to upgrade a position where the Lakers already have talent.
For those who haven’t seen much of Payne’s collegiate career, here is a highlight reel. Some really good stuff in here.
