Russell Leaves Practice With Bone Bruise

Los Angeles Lakers guard D’Angelo Russell suffered a bone bruise under his right foot during practice and limped off the court after trying to play through it.

The injury doesn’t appear to be serious, and the No. 2 pick in the 2015 NBA Draft practiced later that day. Russell downplayed the injury from the start, but it may be something to watch as training camp unfolds.

“It’s like when I stop, it tightens up,” Russell said. “It’s just a bruise. It’s all good. We’ll figure out some different ways around it.”

The Lakers don’t have to go far to find a season completely derailed by injury, and it’s not a good sign Russell is showing indications of discomfort. The team has descent depth this year, but all it takes is just a few injuries to wipe that out.

The Lakers last two seasons are a great example of what to expect when injuries start piling up. It got to the point where the team didn’t have enough bodies to field a squad with backups. Bench players became starters expected to play 40 minutes a night.

The 2015-16 roster has a way to go to get to that point and getting through training camp healthy is the first step. That being said, head coach Byron Scott is known for running an extremely tough camp.

Russell’s not used to such a demanding head coach and one who runs a strenuous camp. It’s something he will have to adjust to and make the proper modifications to his health regiments.

That may require Russell to take it easy for a couple of days, but he’s expected to play in the Lakers first preseason game against the Utah Jazz in Hawaii.
