Though the Los Angeles Lakers came out flat footed to start the game, as play progressed their confidence from their win against the Golden State Warriors began to shine through.
Currently, with Byron Scott at the helm, minutes are hard to come by, but here’s a list of positives that were found throughout last night’s exciting game against the Portland Trailblazers.
Marcelo Huertas has the Midas Touch
Marcelo Huertas has put together back to back impressive games, proving that the Lakers made a brilliant choice when acquiring him this summer from FC Barcelona. Not only is he a great floor general but he will prove to be the perfect mentor for young point guards D’Angelo Russell and Jordan Clarkson.
Huertas is a wizard with the ball, who always seems to make the right decision. Further, through two games, his similarities to Steve Nash are uncanny: the midrange one footed floater, the wrap around passes, the stature. Most importantly, not only does he make the team more fun to watch, he makes them leaps and bounds better with his unselfish play.

Though Larry Nance Jr. impressed the Lakers’ brass in predraft workouts with his amazing athleticism, the past two games he has proven that he is more than just a highflyer.
Similar to the last game against the Warriors, Nance Jr. put his hustle on display nabbing four rebounds and two steals in just 16 minutes of play. More impressively, he shot 3-5 from the floor — including a three pointer and midrange jumpshot.
Having attended Monday night’s game, it can be said with confidence that Larry Nance Jr. is quickly becoming a fan favorite, and for good reason. Every time he touches the ball, you can feel the fans’ anticipation for the possibilities of what could happen next.
The Lakers Are Fully Competent Without Kobe Bryant
For the second game in a row, and more importantly, the second win in a row, the Lakers were able to display their competence without Kobe Bryant on the floor.
Considering the cuts will supposedly be made before Thursday’s rematch against the Golden State Warriors, Bryant’s injury may be a blessing in disguise. No Bryant means more minutes for the young players vying for those ever precious roster spots.
That said, competition has definitely picked up on that front, for even Ryan Kelly and Robert Sacre are playing hard, fighting for their NBA lives.
