Lakers: 50 Greatest Players in Franchise History

35. Sam Perkins

Sam Perkins made a name for himself in the NBA virtually at every spot as he played for four different teams over the course of his career. Only two and a half of those 17 years playing in the league were spent in Los Angeles, but those two and a half years were long enough for him to make a lasting impression in Los Angeles.

Perkins played for the Lakers right at the tail end of Magic’s run with the team and as Perkins’ former college teammate at North Carolina in Michael Jordan started to take over the league. From 1990 to midway through the 1992-93, Perkins played in 185 games for the Lakers, starting in 178 of those outings. He put up tremendous numbers over that time, averaging 14.6 points, eight rebounds, two assists, and one block over his time in Los Angeles while shooting a solid 46.8 percent from the floor.

The former Tar Heel was never a part of any of the all-time great Lakers teams that the franchise has enjoyed over its history, but he was still an integral part of some successful teams alongside one of the greatest players ever. That’s enough for Perkins to get his mention in these rankings for himself.
