As Kobe Bryant’s 20-year NBA career comes to an end this week, there is no doubt that he will go down as one of history’s most iconic players. He made his NBA debut in 1996 at just 18 years old: Two-decades later, he’s taken his place as one of basketball’s superstars and become a worldwide phenomenon. He is set to enter retirement ranked third on the NBA’s career scoring list, finishing with five championships under his belt (a ridiculous number by any standard, currently tying him for 14th place in NBA history).

Outshining all of these accomplishments is his tour de force performance in a single, regular season game: Bryant scored an incredible 81 points against Toronto in 2006, one of the greatest individual achievements in sports history. We think Timberwolves guard Andrew Wiggins said it best, calling him “the greatest of my generation” and stating that Kobe “perfected the game of basketball.” For the sentimental among us, perhaps his most impressive professional stat is that he’s spent his entire career with the Lakers (nobody else in NBA history has played 20 years over three decades with the same franchise). Love him or hate him (and let’s face it, for NBA fans, there is no in between), one thing is certain: you’ve gotta respect what he’s done for the game, and basketball will have lost a true legend when the Black Mamba hangs up his sneakers this week.
