12. Tim Duncan, San Antonio Spurs (Players Option)

Much like a slew of other players around this spot in these rankings (we’ll get to some), Tim Duncan is a bit of a special case. He’s obviously not going to be suiting up for anyone other than the San Antonio Spurs, though. He’s spent the entirety of his illustrious career as a part of the organization and he’s not the type of player that’s going to go elsewhere to middle around in the twilight of his career.

What’s going to be ridiculously curious this offseason, though, is waiting to see if Duncan is playing in the NBA at all next year. No, he’s not going to spend his middle-age years in China—but he might be retiring. After the Spurs were ousted by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the playoffs, Duncan’s future was on the mind of everyone around the league. He wouldn’t speak on the subject just then, but there’s clearly a chance that this is the end of the road in the NBA for the Big Fundamental.

Regardless, his inclusion among this list of NBA free agents is at least a little fraudulent as there seemingly are only two options for Duncan. He’s either opting in or retiring. Anything else would be completely and entirely unheard of at this point.
