According to several sources, the Los Angeles Lakers are nearing a deal to hire former coach and player, Brian Shaw as their lead assistant coach
After firing Byron Scott and hiring Luke Walton, news on the Lakers’ assistant coaching front was placed on the back burner to accommodate for the excitement of keeping their 2016 draft pick but Saturday news about Walton’s future staff resumed.
Per Brad Turner of the LA Times, the Los Angeles Lakers are nearing a deal that would bring on Brian Shaw as the lead assistant coach to Coach Walton.
This should come as no surprise seeing how Shaw has been one of the names commonly associated with taking the Lakers’ assistant job, though it was rumored earlier this week that he was more interested in the Golden State Warriors’ job than the Lakers’.

Ironically, it was Shaw who wanted Walton on his staff, when he was supposed to assume the throne after the departure of Phil Jackson in 2011.
Though this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, the fact that the Lakers are still hiring personnel who have strong ties to the Purple and Gold shows that Byron Scott‘s ugly tenure hasn’t soured their perception on former Lakers.
Now that the New York Knicks have found a head coach and moved on from Kurt Rambis, it will be interesting to see if the team truly tries to get the gang back together and lure Rambis back to the Lakers’ bench.
With all of this in mind, hopefully, Shaw’s hiring doesn’t hinder the movement into the future that Walton is supposed to represent.
