Jokes about his elderly appearance aside, Perry Ellis was a highly productive force on the interior throughout his four years playing with the Kansas Jayhawks. He’s the type of player who got better and added to his game every year that he was in school and a player that just seemed to have a knack for big moments in a number of games.
Admittedly, Perry Ellis is a player that doesn’t fit right into the Lakers roster right now. Julius Randle and Larry Nance Jr. already occupy the space at the power forward position and Ellis would only further complicate things in regards to the rotation. However, Ellis is a guy that has been around the block a time or two as far as facing high levels of competition in college goes and could really be an asset in the locker to help establish a culture.
Moreover, wouldn’t the Lakers just be much more pleasurable to watch if the fans had a player that they could joke about being ancient all the time? The answer is unequivocally yes—and that’s the go-home selling point for why the Lakers should bring Ellis in as an undrafted free agent.
