Russell Westbrook isn’t joining the Lakers in the foreseeable future, but not all is lost because of it

Despite tons of smoke signals, a multitude of rumors, and many other things of the sort, the Los Angeles Lakers aren’t going to get Russell Westbrook.

On Wednesday night, reports began circulating that the Oklahoma City Thunder and the All-Star point guard were nearing an agreement on a contract extension that would keep Westbrook in Oklahoma City through the 2018-19 season. By the end of the night, the reports turned to an agreement having been reached and Westbrook set to sign the paperwork on Thursday.

Immediately the reaction on social media seemed to be trolling the Lakers. There were Crying Jordans, other memes of the sort, and plenty of disparaging comments about how upset Lakers fans were going to be that a Russell Westbrook trade wasn’t going to happen.

However, that actually is a bit of a misrepresentation of the way that Lakers fans should be feeling.

Yes, the team isn’t going to get one of the most lethal and versatile players in the league, but there are other factors to consider and reasons to still be excited about the team going forward. Here are the three biggest reasons why it’s fine that Russell Westbrook isn’t going to be joining the Los Angeles Lakers.
