Though you may have thought he already had it all in Los Angeles, the announcement of Kobe Bryant Day proves otherwise
Monday was a big day for Kobe Bryant in his post-Los Angeles Lakers life. Not only was it revealed that he’s a partner in a major venture capital fund, but the City of LA also had a surprise for him. On Monday, the Los Angeles City Council declared that August 24 will be Kobe Bryant Day, per CBS Los Angeles.
It doesn’t take Sherlock Holmes to figure out why Wednesday was chosen for the honor. Bryant wore two numbers throughout his 20-year Lakers career: Nos. 8 and 24. So making Kobe Bryant Day 8/24 was the only logical choice.
More than that, though, this is yet another shining example of Kobe’s lasting impact. Bryant not only left his imprint on the Lakers, but on Los Angeles as a whole. He’s an icon, a hero, and one of the most important sports figures in the history of the city. For a place that has so much history rooted in the sports world, that can’t be undervalued.
Subsequently, that’s why the city is still honoring Kobe even after his playing days are over. Even if his days playing in STAPLES Center are over, his impact in Los Angeles aren’t. Whether it be in the business world, through his work with Nike, or his assumed continued relationship with the Lakers, Bryant is still going to be a major part of LA and the organization even in post-retirement life.
The festivities for Kobe Bryant Day will begin at 10 a.m. PT at Los Angeles City Hall on Wednesday. Details as for what’s planned for the occasion aren’t yet known, but whatever it is promises to be special. And most thankfully for Lakers fans, the Mamba still isn’t all the way out.
