A new facet of Lakers’ practices seems to be the inclusion of music playing over the gym’s loud speakers

The long-awaited media day for the Los Angeles Lakers has officially come and gone. Players and coaching staff alike were interviewed by local media about all things related to the team, including what to expect in training camp, the regular season, and beyond.

Among those who garnered a lot of camera time was head coach Luke Walton, who has largely been the center of attention since the end of LA’s abysmal 17-win season last April.

Of the questions he was asked, one of them pertained to his peculiar decision to play music at the team’s practices.

Here’s what he had to say:

"Growing up, I always loved playing with music, playing basketball with music on. And when I got to Golden State, it’s something that Steve Kerr put in up there and you could see a little bounce in their [the players’] step when we had music going. [It’s] something I enjoyed as a player and I saw it work with the team, so it’s something we brought down here."

The decision to institute music in practice sessions, as trivial as that may appear, speaks to Walton’s attempt to revitalize a young team that largely struggled to keep its head up during a dreadful 2016 season.

In fact, t’s small decisions like these that have made Walton such an endearing figure among the players.

While it’s unlikely that Walton will find anywhere near the level of success he had as an assistant in Golden State during his first year as the coach of the Purple and Gold, it is important that the team take baby steps in the right direction going forward.

Seemingly banal moves like the decision to blast music at practice will only help in that process.
