Lakers: Following Buyout, Warriors Eyeing Jose Calderon
Once the Lakers reach a buyout deal with Jose Calderon, the Warriors are expected to sign the 35-year-old Spanish guard, according to ESPN’s Marc Stein.
Just seven months into his career with the Los Angeles Lakers, Jose Calderon is anticipating a move to the Golde State Warriors. According to ESPN’s Marc Stein, the 2015 league champions are interested in signing the 35-year-old Spanish guard once he hits the open market.
"The Golden State Warriors have emerged as the strong favorite to sign veteran guard Jose Calderon once he completes his expected buyout with the Los Angeles Lakers, according to league sources."
Stein also mentions that the Lakers must waive Calderon by Wednesday in order for him to be eligible to sign with a playoff team. The Warriors clinched a playoff spot Saturday with their win against the last-place Brooklyn Nets.
Calderon was acquired in a salary dump that allowed the Chicago Bulls to sign Dwyane Wade and gave the Lakers two future second draft picks. It was believed at the time that he would assume the backup guard role, but as the season went on his role with the team got smaller and smaller.

Calderon was putting up a career-low 3.3 points per game during his stint with the Purple and Gold, but he only averaged 12.2 minutes per game. With the Warriors, his role likely won’t be any bigger.
The Warriors have one of the best backup point guards in the NBA in Shaun Livingston. However, one thing that Calderon offers that Livingston doesn’t is outside shooting. Calderon is a career 40 percent shooter from the 3-point line, while Livingston has never attempted more than 0.5 3-pointers per game. His ability to space the floor will give the Warriors an option off the bench they don’t currently have on the bench.
