The Hollywood Story
Let’s not kid ourselves. Hollywood will eat this up alive. Beyond how Earvin became Magic on the court, now he is personally selecting players that reflect him. Magic gives Hollywood our next great sports movie. The last decent one I remember was Creed. Imagine this: Magic’s surprise pick takes the Lakers from bottom seed in the West to the playoffs as an 8th seed next year!
I’m not sure what level he advances to? Johnson’s banners and statues are heralded at Staples Center for fans and tourist alike. Would Magic leap frog into the most impactful Laker ever? Would he essentially be what Michael Jordan is to Chicago?
I did not live in the era of the Showtime Lakers. Countless videos on YouTube do not truly capture their impact during the 80’s; consequently, for me, Kobe is my MJ. Yet, if Magic could somehow change the team through this pick, he would also change the city of Los Angeles.
Next: Who are the 50 greatest Lakers of all-time?
This, in my mind, would advance his impact to the Lakers beyond Kobe. The city of Los Angeles has experienced so much recent heartache with this team that even mediocrity might cause tears of joy. Drafting a player that could give this city hope is cause enough to instantly call Steven Spielberg.
