Recent Lakers rumors have been about their interest in guard Jamal Crawford. Are they still interested in the veteran if he is bought out?

So far this offseason, there have been plenty of Lakers rumors surrounding their interest in some of the free agent guards.

Despite drafting Lonzo Ball with the second overall pick, the Lakers are seeking to add another guard to their roster. One of the names that recently came up was Jamal Crawford.

As one of the best sixth men in the NBA, Crawford could be a good addition to many teams in the NBA. Despite having some interest early on, that interest is reportedly dying.

When Crawford receives his buyout from the Hawks, he will become a free agent. With the Lakers’ interest fading, a few good teams are expected to pursue Crawford. According to Marc Spears, the Cleveland Cavaliers, Washington Wizards, and Minnesota Timberwolves will be interested.

Last season, Crawford was a key member of the Los Angeles Clippers’ rotation. In the 2016-17 season, Crawford averaged 12.3 points per game. However, at 37-years-old, Crawford is past his prime. Last year with the Clippers was his lowest scoring average per game since his third season in the NBA.

For the Lakers, adding Crawford might not have been the best move. While Crawford is certainly a great scorer, he doesn’t do much else on the court. Also, him being on the team would take away minutes and scoring opportunities from younger players.

Crawford gaining interest from teams that hope to contend make a bit more sense than the Lakers. With his career winding down, Crawford would be best-suited to go to a team that has a chance to compete. Even though the Lakers might be better next season, they likely won’t be contending for a playoff spot.

Even though Crawford would help a bit, the Lakers are better off sticking with some of their young players instead.
