Los Angeles Lakers: How David Nwaba will increase role year two
Teetering between the D-league and a role on the bench, the Los Angeles Lakers extended David Nwaba’s $1.3 million player option. Now, what will get him on the court?
The movies Hoosiers and Rudy are some of the classics that we love. Why? Because each tells the story of defying the odds by unexpected successes. Would Paul George or Lebron James be a great story? Sure, but we expect that storyline from a mile away like the next Michael Bay Transformer movie. As improbable as it may seem, the Los Angeles Lakers have their own storyline in the making.
From the moment he began his 10-day contract, David Nwaba was a diamond in the rough for the Lakers. Nwaba persevered through an improbable journey of fulfilling his NBA dreams, becoming one of the first transactions under the new front office regime led by President of Basketball Operations, Magic Johnson.
According to Eric Sondheimer of the Los Angeles Times, Nwaba further alluded to his perseverance saying:
"“I just had confidence in myself. I just felt I had to prove a lot of people wrong who didn’t believe in me. Just believing in myself made me get to where I am now.”"
The storyline is great. The confidence seems real, but in times of peril Magic Johnson and the Lakers are forced to ignore what ‘seems to be’ and observe ‘what is’. What Johnson and the team observe is this.
No matter how much confidence Nwaba has in himself, how much he will see the court next season will be dependent on two factors. What are those factors? We break down the two things that will get Nwaba into the rotation regularly for the Lakers during the 2017-18 season.
